FAST FACT:

Spahn’s career was interrupted by three years of service in the Army during World War II.

Who was the only pitcher to lead the majors in ERA four years in a row?

In 2010, Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers had an ERA of 2.91, which ranked ninth in the National League. Not too bad, right? Well, it’s actually the worst ERA he has put up over a full season in his career. Kershaw led the league every season from 2011 through 2014. It took a spectacular season to end the run. In 2015, his teammate Zack Greinke had a 1.66 ERA, which beat Kershaw’s 2.13.

With another great season in 2016, Kershaw lowered his career ERA to 2.37. That’s the lowest mark for any starter who has pitched in the last 89 years.
